Do You Have a “Holiday” or “December” Mindset?

December 9, 2015 by Melissa Rapoport 16 Comments

Most Nutritious December Ever

It is time to create your Most Nutritious December Ever!

Over the weekend I had the honor of working with one of my business mentors, Hal Elrod, author of the an incredible book, The Miracle Morning.

In one of our conversations he asked, “Do you have a Holiday Mindset or a December Mindset?”

Huh? Did you have to stop and think about that one for a moment? Me too.

Here’s a reframe:

  • Do you put everything “on hold” during the holidays and think, “It’s the holidays. Once January 1st hits I’ll get back on track?” That is “Holiday Mindset.”
  • Or, do you buckle down, stick to your plans and make stuff happen?” That is a “December Mindset.”

Hal’s theory is that we can have a December of mediocrity (maybe even backslide), OR we can create “The Best December Ever” by staying aware, committed and consciously understanding that everything we do this month sets us up for success going into the New Year.

“Ding Ding Ding!” All the bells went off — this applies to our health in particular. In fact, I’m willing to bet this applies to our health most of all!

Think about it: Thanksgiving Day triggers the holiday feeding frenzy. We give up the moment the turkey hits the table, thinking, “Why even try, it’s the holidays?”

We eat, we drink, we eat some more, we go shopping, we eat, we go to parties, we eat some more. Before you know it, New Year’s Day is here and our favorite clothes are tight, we feel bloated and our energy is zapped. And, to be frank, we feel pretty crappy about ourselves.

We have the opportunity to change that outcome right now!

We are only in the first week of December and it is entirely possible to create Your Most Nutritious December Ever!

I just set up the Facebook community! Join us!

4 Ways To Create Your Most Nutritious December Ever

Commit to Eating Well Right Now— Yes, of course, there’s a bit of indulging during the holidays! And that’s the point: A bit! Write this in your journal, make it your screensaver, put up a post-it note: I commit to eating well at least 80% of the time. Sign your commitment and place it where you can see it on a daily basis.

Visualize What You Will Eat (Or Not Eat!) At A Party — Parties might be one of the most tempting places to go crazy during the holidays. It feels like a free-for-all with so many “treats.” Visualize the hors-d’oeuvres being passed and see what you take to nibble on and what you pass up. See what you put on your plate at the buffet table and visualize what (and how much) dessert you will enjoy. Visualization is a key to success for professional athletes and successful CEOs. You can use it too!

Ask Yourself This One Powerful Question — “Am I nourishing my body?” If the answer is yes, enjoy. If the answer is no, ask yourself, “Do I really want it?” And, if you find that the answer is “no” a heck of a lot more than “yes” you may be harming your body, your mind and your spirit! Actively choosing your food makes a huge, huge difference.

Find A Like-Minded Accountability Buddy — Chances are you have at least one (probably more!) friend or family member who would love to create their Most Nutritious December Ever. Check in daily and ask, “How are you creating Your Most Nutritious December Ever today?”

Want a little added acccountability and inspiration? (I thought of this as I was writing the blog post!) Join the “Most Nutritious December Ever” community on Facebook. I’ll post one hack or success every day until New Year’s. And, you can add posts too! Let’s do it together!

I continue to eat healthy throughout the holidays. I must eat gluten free, so that helps…especially around the cookies! One thing I need to concentrate on is the quantity. Even if it’s healthy food, over-filling myself does a number on my intestines & I just feel sick.

By nature, I tend toward a December mindset but I love 80/20 — totally do-able. Thanks for the reminder.

I love the 80-20 guideline and recommend it all year long, not just in December.

Hi Rachel! I tend to veer away from the 80/20 concept with my clients the rest of the year. Often, with my clients, that 20% leans toward sugar so we work to find the magic formula for each person. I would love to sit and compare notes sometime. Thank you for reading and sharing. Happy Hanukkah! xo

I’m all in with a December mindset, Melissa! Kicking off a new live Meditation program next week for online meditation deepening, getting ready for the launch of my new signature program in January and more! Loved your suggestions around visualizing what you will eat at events.

Well, maybe I’m straddling both mindsets this year. I’m nourishing myself very 80/20, yet I’m taking the last two weeks of the month off of work! Which is a radical act for me. I will see every movie, visit the beach maybe twice, feel what it’s like to not work, and eat mindfully and healthily the whole time (I mean, 80% of the time!).

    Great post, thanks.

Yay! Taking two weeks off! Congrats on taking courageous (and radical) action. I can’t wait to hear about your time away. Enjoy, Sue! xo
