I’ve invited online weight loss coach Nagina Abdullah to the blog to share her tips for boosting metabolism first thing in the morning. The Founder of Masala Body, Nagina struggled with her weight for years and tried many fad diets with terrible results. She used her degree in Molecular and Cell Biology from UC Berkeley to design a weight loss diet and program that helped her naturally lose 40 pounds. She has now helped over 1,200 professional women increase their metabolism and energy using food combinations based on scientifically-backed, yet simple, methods.
Made from everyday ingredients in your fridge, this recipe for debloating water will help boost your metabolism and reduce your sugar cravings.
I’m a big proponent of only eating and drinking things that taste good, so many of the recipes I follow are actually about adding food, not subtracting. This is what helps make healthy habits stick.
There’s an easy (and indulgent!) step you can take in the AM to boost your metabolism and help you get off of sugar. This infused debloating water is simple to prepare, can help boost your metabolism, and best of all – it works to detoxify and debloat.
You’ll physically feel lighter and more energetic due to the combination of lemon, cucumber, mint, and water. This combination also helps you reduce sugar cravings which often can lead to natural fat loss.
The Debloating Water Recipe
Combine any or all these ingredients below in a large pitcher and let them infuse overnight. Drink one glass a day (or more), preferably first thing in the morning.
- 6 cups of water
- 1- 2 lemons, sliced in rounds with the peel on
- 1 medium cucumber, sliced in rounds with the peel on
- 6-8 sprigs of fresh mint for muddling
- Optional: sprinkle of cayenne or paprika
A glass of this debloating water when you wake up in the morning can boost your metabolism, eliminate toxins, melt away belly fat, and help curb cravings that lead to overeating.
Here’s the science on how this healthy habit can change your body from the inside AND inspire a more positive mindset.
Water
Drinking water helps increase your metabolism, and getting plenty of water is one of the best ways to ensure digestion and eliminate toxins through the colon.
Lemon
Lemons contain micronutrients with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Experts link long-term chronic inflammation to a variety of diseases, but the Vitamin C in lemons can help boost your immune system.
Cucumber
Did you know that you can make your water even more hydrating? A cucumber consists of around 96% water – crowning it the king of hydrating foods.
Cucumbers also contain important electrolytes that help reduce sodium and maintain fluid balance in the body. Full of potassium, magnesium, vitamin K, calcium, and fiber, cucumbers are associated with everything from reversing diabetes to preventing cancer cells from reproducing.
Mint
With mint, the magic is all in the scent. Due to its strong aroma, mint is a natural appetite suppressant that can be used to keep sugar cravings at bay and prevent overeating at lunch and dinner.
Cayenne
If you like a little kick, try adding a sprinkle of cayenne (or paprika for the less adventurous) to really rev up your metabolism and curb your appetite.
Substitutions
Since life is never perfect and neither are we and maybe you used all of your mint for the mojitos you had last night, (and in that case, this water is the perfect way to rehydrate and reset) these substitutions can still get the job done:
- Limes in place of lemons
- Lemon juice in place of fresh lemons
- Fresh herbs like basil and thyme in place of mint
While I recommend starting your day off with a cold glass in the morning, it can be drunk at any temperature you prefer. It also makes a great afternoon pick-me-up (even warm!) that can help curb cravings until dinner. You can also reuse the lemon, mint, and cucumber as you refill your pitcher with water – just make sure to change it out after 3 days.
Debloating Water jumpstarts a metabolism-boosting morning and your healthy lifestyle
You practice self-care with a routine that is more positive, sustainable, and enjoyable than restricting yourself.
Imagine how incredible your morning is going to feel when you open your fridge and see a gorgeous pitcher of fresh, cold water filled with bright lemon, cool cucumber, and leafy mint waiting for you.
You treat yourself like you’re at a spa. Pour a nice tall glass of infused debloating water, and start your day by giving yourself a luxurious gift. Your body (and mind) will thank you.
